Kinja'd!!!

I found the video card I want at a price I’m willing to pay, and this doofus hasn’t responded to either of my emails in two weeks. The only contact information is via a generic craigslist email, no phone/text number.

What’s the point?

This is the other side of CL frustration. I had two or three times when I called a seller about an Acura and couldn’t get a response by text or phone. I finally reached one guy by phone who told me he sold the car. Could have answered my text and told me that a week ago, buddy.

I see another listing for most likely the same car with a phone number at a higher price though.

Rarely use CL, but I always tell a potential buyer when I’ve taken an offer. Why let people wonder?

Here’s a random question: have you looked for the part on Ebay?

Yeah, but the sellers want outrageous money, over 50% more than I’m finding on CL. This cryptocurrency thing is making it impossible to get a good, older video card on the cheap.

What kind of card is that? I can try to work my deal-finding wizardry to find you a cheap one.

Why you want so old video card, mang? SO OLD!

So I don’t have to upgrade the trusty Hackintosh to a newer OS. The price/performance ratio at $200 can’t be beat, provided someone actually sells one at that price (that seems to be the going and advertised price on the used market).

That would be awesome! The card in looking for is some flavor of GTX980; Ti, OC, SC -whatever. This is for the Hackintosh/Flightsim computer, and the 980 is the newest card that’ll work with El Capitan.

Newer cards, like the GTX 1050, seem to be slower at the same price point (approx $200). If it comes down to it I guess I could upgrade to 10.12 and get a different card (GTX 10x0 series).

They are using the video cards for Bitcoin mining?

I knew that, but I never would have guessed that they’d use medium-old graphics cards though. And the low hanging fruit of bitcoins were all picked long ago. So this is a bit surprising.

Sadly, craigslist messages can get erroneously flagged by the seller’s spam filters, so they are sitting there wondering why no one is replying to their ad. I got bit by this when I last had a car listed. I missed weeks of messages because it all went into the spam folder.

What’s your budget? I’m on the case!

I have a 1050 TI I’m trying to get rid of for at $150 or more, but that does appear to be slower than even a standard GTX 980. Though that’s not surprising, the 980 is the top end of the 9 series while the 1050 TI is sort of middle on the 10 series scale.

I’m looking to spend about $200, which is about the going price for a GTX 980 SC in my area, although I wouldn’t say no to a Ti at that price

. I’d prefer something that hasn’t been used for cryptocurrency mining; I’m assuming that mining tends to overstress video cards and run them at peak performance for extended durations, unlike gaming which just taxes them periodically (like driving a Ferrari at 200 MPH for a few sprints or track days as opposed to doing 200 MPH for a 10-hour stretch [with an unlimited fuel tank, amirite?])

Thanks again.

Darn it!! I tried working a couple of my part sources. The only one that didn’t have an inflated price (ifixit) doesn’t have them in stock. *Sigh* Even the cheapest 980 on the local list of Craig is $300.

Thanks for checking. Now that I’m not getting the big tax refund I was hoping for, perhaps it’s best that I spend my savings on things like taxes and other un-fun things. :(

Maybe I’ll try to seek a trade for my old computer case, this goofy liquid-cooled thing from an HP Blackbird Voodoo 002. I’ve seen people asking several hundred bucks for these, so perhaps someone might be amenable to a straight-across trade, their old video card for my old case.
